In these moments, words matter more than ever. While people often mean well, certain phrases can unintentionally hurt those who are grieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u201cI know how you feel.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019ve experienced loss yourself, everyone grieves differently. Saying you \u201cknow\u201d can minimize the other person\u2019s unique pain. Instead, simply listen and offer support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u201cThey\u2019re in a better place.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While this is meant to be comforting, it can feel dismissive to those struggling with their loss, especially if they aren\u2019t religious or have different beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. \u201cIt was God\u2019s plan\u201d or \u201cEverything happens for a reason.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These phrases can make the grieving person feel guilty or confused. The timing is often inappropriate, as they need empathy, not philosophical explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u201cAt least they lived a long life\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially harmful. No matter the age, the pain of losing someone is profound. Comparing or rationalizing the loss can feel insensitive and dismissive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. \u201cTime heals everything.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Grief doesn\u2019t follow a timetable. Suggesting it will just go away can make the person feel pressured to \u201cmove on\u201d before they\u2019re ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Better Things to Say<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m here for you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI can\u2019t imagine how hard this is for you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWould you like to talk or sit in silence together?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting someone through grief is about listening, being present, and offering comfort without judgment.
