One of the officers stepped forward, asking calmly, <em>\u201cSir, can you explain what this is?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My husband blinked, looked at me, then back at the cops. He said, <em>\u201cOh\u2026 that\u2019s for my art project.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art project? The officer raised an eyebrow. <em>\u201cYou collect women\u2019s hair?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He nodded, suddenly animated. <em>\u201cYes! I\u2019m working on a mixed-media installation that explores human identity through personal artifacts. Hair is deeply personal, you know? Each lock tells a story.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I looked at the labeled bags again. \u201c12in, red.\u201d \u201cGray \u2013 coarse.\u201d \u201cBlonde \u2013 silky.\u201d All ziplocked and tucked away like forensic evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police asked a few more questions, searched the rest of the house, and found even more bags hidden in a drawer labeled \u201cPhase II.\u201d There were sketches. Notes. Even a mannequin covered entirely in hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No crimes had been committed. No one was missing. But that didn\u2019t make it less horrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t sleep that night. I lay awake wondering how I never noticed. Who collects hair?
