After a long day at work, I decided to wander through our small local flea market. I wasn\u2019t looking for anything special \u2014 maybe an old book, a teacup, or some used dishes to add to my mismatched collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s when I saw them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A grandmother and a little girl, no more than five years old, stood a few feet away. The woman\u2019s coat was worn thin, her shoes nearly split at the seams. The child\u2019s eyes, however, sparkled with innocent wonder as she gazed at a pale yellow dress hanging on a rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGrandma, look!\u201d she exclaimed. \u201cIf I wear this, I\u2019ll be a princess at the kindergarten fall festival!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The grandmother picked up the tag. Ten dollars. Her face fell. She bent down and whispered gently, \u201cHoney\u2026 this is our food for the week. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The little girl lowered her head, trying to smile through her disappointment. \u201cIt\u2019s okay, Grandma,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My chest ached at the sight. I knew that struggle. After my husband died, raising my daughter alone meant that even the smallest treats often felt impossible. Without thinking twice, I rushed over, bought the dress, and hurried after them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cExcuse me!\u201d I called, my voice shaky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They turned. The little girl peeked out from behind her grandmother\u2019s leg as I held out the bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is for her,\u201d I said. \u201cPlease let her have this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The grandmother\u2019s lips trembled. \u201cI don\u2019t know how to thank you. I\u2019m raising her alone\u2026 it\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I nodded, my own throat tight. \u201cI know. Just let her feel special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she accepted the bag. \u201cThank you. I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next morning, while I was packing my daughter\u2019s lunch, a loud knock echoed at my door. Curious, I opened it \u2014 and froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
