It was supposed to be a normal afternoon. I was out shopping with my boyfriend \u2014 laughing, holding hands, just another couple enjoying the weekend. We were in the middle of the food court when a woman, maybe in her 40s, walked straight up to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She didn\u2019t smile. She didn\u2019t even introduce herself. She just pressed something into my hand and whispered, \u201cYou need this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I looked down, I saw it was a sanitary pad. I blinked, confused. I wasn\u2019t on my period \u2014 I was sure of it. My first thought was that she had mistaken me for someone else, but the look in her eyes made my stomach twist. There was fear there. Urgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something felt off. I excused myself and went to the restroom. I locked the door, unwrapped the pad \u2014 and froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside, in shaky red ink, were two words: \u201cGET OUT.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My hands went cold. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, then back toward the door. My mind raced. What did she mean? Why me? Then, for the first time, I noticed something I\u2019d ignored all day \u2014 my boyfriend had been oddly possessive. He hadn\u2019t let me out of his sight. He\u2019d kept checking my phone, steering me away from people, insisting we go places he<\/em> chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I peeked out of the restroom. The woman was gone. My boyfriend was pacing near the exit, scanning the crowd. I felt sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I didn\u2019t go back to him. I slipped out through the side door, ran to security, and told them everything. When they checked the cameras, they saw the woman approaching me \u2014 and then saw my boyfriend subtly tailing her, glaring. Security detained him until police arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Turns out, that woman had seen him earlier \u2014 whispering to a man near the parking lot, exchanging what looked like cash. She felt something was wrong, followed us, and acted fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I don\u2019t know what would\u2019ve happened if she hadn\u2019t handed me that pad.
