I stepped outside to water my flowers and make sure the neighborhood cats hadn’t torn up the trash again. But before I even reached the garden, I stopped dead in my tracks — an unbearable stench hit me so hard that I felt my stomach twist.

Right there, by the flower bed, something was moving.

It looked like a creature from a nightmare — slimy, glistening, and red, like it had been turned inside out. A gelatinous sac pulsed slightly under the sunlight. The smell of decay filled the air, so sharp it burned my nose.

My first thought was that an animal had died — or worse, that I’d stumbled upon something unnatural. Trembling, I snapped a photo and rushed back inside.

I typed into Google: “red slimy thing smells like rotting flesh.”

At first, I saw people describing parasites, sea creatures, even alien eggs.
