For a recent work trip, I had the window and middle seat. Armrest up. Bag tucked away. Finally relaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then a smug couple walked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man looked at his ticket, looked at the empty seat, and without asking, plopped down right into the middle seat I had paid for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSorry,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cI paid for both seats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He scoffed loudly, \u201cSeriously? It\u2019s EMPTY. RELAX.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I could respond, he leaned back, spread his legs, and started bumping into me like I<\/em> was the one invading his<\/em> space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked him again, \u201cPlease move. That seat isn\u2019t yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He snapped, \u201cI\u2019M NOT MOVING. DEAL WITH IT.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could have called the flight attendant \u2014 and believe me, I was seconds away. But I decided to try something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I reached into my bag\u2026 and pulled out both boarding passes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I held them right up to his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWindow seat.
Middle seat.
Both purchased by me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He froze. His wife leaned over his shoulder, read the tickets\u2026 and her eyes widened in horror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She whispered, \u201cGet up. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He muttered something under his breath but stood \u2014 and the entire row behind us started clapping. Not loud applause, but that quiet, satisfying \u201cthank you\u201d clap people do when someone finally gets what they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he slunk back to his actual seat several rows behind us, his wife followed, shaking her head like she was tired of cleaning up his messes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flight attendant came by later and said softly, \u201cYou handled that better than most people would\u2019ve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I just nodded. Because here\u2019s the truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect isn\u2019t complicated.
If someone pays for something, it\u2019s theirs.
If someone sets a boundary, you honor it.
And if you\u2019re wrong, you move \u2014 literally and figuratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man wanted to embarrass me.
Instead, he embarrassed himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the best part?
