When my husband walked out years ago\u2014choosing his pregnant mistress over our family\u2014I thought the worst was behind me. I raised our two kids alone. No help. No visits. No apologies. He disappeared like we never existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last week, out of nowhere, he showed up on my doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Standing beside him was a little girl\u2014his daughter with the woman he left us for. He didn\u2019t say hello. He didn\u2019t ask about our kids. He just said he needed me to babysit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two months passed. Life went on. I pushed the moment out of my mind\u2014until yesterday, when my phone rang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A woman\u2019s voice. Shaky. Nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPlease\u2026 I\u2019m his wife,\u201d she said. \u201cI know you don\u2019t owe me anything. But I need to tell you something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then\u2014words that made my blood run cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy husband was arrested. He left the country\u2026 and abandoned his daughter. Completely. No one will take her. I found your number. I thought\u2014maybe you\u2019d want to know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She continued, voice breaking: \u201cHe told everyone you<\/em> were coming for her. That the little girl was already with you. He lied to everyone. He\u2019s gone. And that child has no one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I stood there frozen, remembering her tiny face on my doorstep.
