A young man was shopping in a supermarket when he noticed an elderly woman following him around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If he stopped, she stopped. If he looked at something, she seemed to do the same. She kept glancing at him repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, at the checkout, she got ahead of him in line, turned to him, and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cI hope I haven\u2019t made you uncomfortable. It\u2019s just that\u2026 you look so much like my late son.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
He smiled gently and replied,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cThat\u2019s okay, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
She nodded, holding back tears, and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cI know it\u2019s silly, but\u2026 would you mind saying, \u2018Goodbye, Mom\u2019 when I leave? It would mean so much to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
He was touched. \u201cOf course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As she walked out of the store with her bags, he waved and called out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cGoodbye, Mom!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
She turned, smiled warmly, and waved back. He felt good \u2014 like he had helped someone through a hard moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier finished scanning his items and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cThat\u2019ll be $257.43.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
He blinked. \u201cWait, what?! I only bought a few things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cashier replied,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
