After years of waiting, paperwork, interviews, and countless emotional conversations, one couple finally received the news they had dreamed of hearing: they had been approved to adopt a young child.
The weeks that followed were filled with excitement. They prepared a bedroom, bought clothes and toys, installed safety locks around the house, and tried to imagine what their first day together would feel like.
When the adoption day finally arrived, everything seemed almost unreal.
They carried their new little boy through the front door while relatives waited nearby with balloons and a small welcome-home celebration. The child appeared curious but quiet, looking around the unfamiliar house while holding tightly to the stuffed animal he had brought with him.
For the couple, it was one of the happiest moments of their lives.
But less than an hour later, that happiness suddenly turned into panic.
While the adults were talking in the kitchen, the little boy wandered toward the living room. Like many young children exploring a new environment, he began touching everything around him.On a low table sat a decorative houseplant.
Before anyone realized what was happening, he had pulled off part of a leaf and put it in his mouth.
His new mother noticed him chewing and immediately rushed across the room
