BOYFRIEND:
I just got the test results back, Amanda. They say that… I was infertile.
But I’m not anymore.
Apparently, it was a hormonal imbalance. The doctor said my fertility returned a few months ago after I started treatment.

HER FUTURE MIL:
W-What? That can’t be true… they told us you could never—

BOYFRIEND:
Things change, Mom. And Amanda didn’t cheat.
She’s carrying my child. Our child.
And you owe her an apology.

HER FUTURE MIL:
I-I… I was only trying to protect you…

GIRLFRIEND: (teary-eyed)
You humiliated me. Called me a liar. Tried to throw me out like I meant nothing.

BOYFRIEND:
Amanda, I’m so sorry you had to go through that. But I’m here. And I want to build our future together. If anyone should leave this house—it’s whoever can’t respect the mother of my child.

(A heavy silence falls across the table.)

HER FUTURE MIL:
…You’re right.
I overreacted. I let my fear cloud my judgment. Amanda… I’m sorry. I hope you can forgive me.

GIRLFRIEND:
I’ll try. But it’ll take time.

BOYFRIEND:
And we’ll take that time together—one step at a time. As a family.
