My Amish Friend Showed Me This “Poor Man’s Steak” Recipe — And It Tastes Anything But Poor

🍽️ Amish Poor Man’s Steak Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 ½ cups cracker crumbs (saltines or Ritz work great)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 ½ cups milk (extra, for the gravy)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, cracker crumbs, 1 cup milk, onion, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into thick patties (like oversized hamburger steaks).
  3. Place the patties in a large baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup with 1 ½ cups of milk to create a smooth gravy.
  5. Pour the gravy over the patties in the baking dish.
  6. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight (this step helps the flavors soak in — but if you’re short on time, you can bake right away).
  7. When ready to cook, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake, covered, for 1 hour. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy.

Serve with: mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or fresh bread — and pour that creamy mushroom gravy over the top.
