Inside each compartment, the wasp lays an egg and stocks it with paralyzed spiders or insects as food for the developing larva. What she was seeing were larvae mid-development.

The realization made her stomach turn. This nest hadn’t appeared overnight. It had been there for weeks, maybe months. While she parked the car, walked past the cabinet, and barely glanced at that corner, life had been growing silently above her head. The larvae inside were alive, feeding, growing, waiting. Mud daubers are generally not aggressive, but the thought that living insects had been developing so close — unnoticed — made her skin crawl. It wasn’t the danger that scared her most.
